A Historic Journey from Independence to Prosperity
Elisabeta Kadrija, Dec 18, 2023
Qatar National Day, observed on December 18th, commemorates
the succession of Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani, the visionary founder
of the State of Qatar, in 1878. This day holds profound significance, marking
the transition of leadership and the beginning of a remarkable era in Qatar's
history.
Sheikh Jassim's Legacy:
Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani, a multifaceted leader,
left an indelible mark on Qatar's development. Born in 1827, he was not just a
ruler but a military strategist, judge, scholar, and poet. His reign saw Qatar
flourish economically, as he strategically improved harbors, expanded
urbanization, and enhanced shipbuilding to support the booming pearl trade.
Under his leadership, commercial relations with India and East African
countries thrived, providing employment opportunities and elevating living
standards for the people of Qatar.
Qatar National Day Observance:
Qatar National Day is a public holiday, allowing the nation
to reflect on its rich history. Most schools and workplaces grant the day off,
fostering a sense of unity and patriotism. Citizens adorn their vehicles with
the national flag and participate in various festivities, showcasing their
pride for the country.
Major Events:
The day is marked by grand events across prominent locations
such as Doha Corniche, Darb Al Saai, Katara Cultural Village, and Aspire Zone.
A spectacular parade featuring officials from the Armed Forces, Ministry of
Interior, and the general public winds through Doha Corniche. Fireworks
illuminate the sky, and classic car shows display antique vehicles once owned
by government officials. Katara Cultural Village hosts cultural and
heritage-themed programs, emphasizing the importance of preserving Qatar's rich
traditions.
Unforgettable Moments:
In 2016, Qatar made a poignant decision to cancel its
National Day celebrations as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Aleppo,
who were enduring intense shelling by Syrian government forces. Sheikh Tamim
bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, ordered the cancellation to express
empathy for those facing repression, torture, displacement, and genocide.
Qatar National Day is more than just a date on the calendar;
it is a celebration of resilience, progress, and national identity. As the
nation reflects on its past, embraces its present, and looks toward the future,
the legacy of Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani continues to inspire a
spirit of unity and prosperity. In honoring this day, Qatar reaffirms its
commitment to growth, development, and global solidarity.
